Vanuatu Country Rep presents at national youth forum
Port Vila Vanuatu, September 12- PLP’s Vanuatu Country Representative Nelly Willy participated in the Vanuatu Youth Economic Employment Forum held recently in Port Vila. Nelly presented findings from the PLP commissioned Regional Youth Employment Scan (YES) specifically on the Vanuatu component of the YES. She also participated in a panel discussion on the Civil Society and Youth Economic Empowerment in Vanuatu draft statement.
Copies of the YES Report were distributed to representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Vanuatu National Youth Council (VNYC). A representative from the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce said that they had circulated the report to their employer networks.
During the Panel Discussion, Nelly spoke about support PLP provided in Phases 1 and 2 to VNYC, Youth Challenge Vanuatu and Oxfam in the area of youth economic empowerment and youth leadership . This year, PLP will support the VNYC conduct research that will inform future youth policies.
One of the issues raised during the panel discussion was that while the YES provided options to the tripartite forum (government, employers and employees) to address Vanuatu’s youth employment issues, implementation and who would take the lead were issues to contend with. It was also noted that regional partners such as the International Labour Organisation, and PYC play a key role in creating a space for government, the VCC as the employer’s representative and Vanuatu civil society organisations to discuss youth employment.
PLP currently supports the Pacific Youth Council (PYC) at regional level . PYC connects national youth organisations to regional and international policy makers and organisations. PLP support has enabled the Council to facilitate participation of youth actors in anti-corruption initiatives, commission research around youth employment, and convene a regional youth entrepreneurship forum with the Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation in June. PYC was one of the conveners of the Vanuatu Youth Economic Employment Forum.
