Initiatives - Gender Equality in Political

UNIFEM Gender Equality in Political Governance (GEPG) Program

Of the 25 countries with the lowest percentage of women in parliament, 10 of these countries are in the Pacific region. The GEPG is an initiative of UN Women (formally UNIFEM), which seeks to address this imbalance and increase the political participation of Pacific women as active citizens and leaders. PLP, on behalf of AusAID, provides funding for this five year program, which works to build knowledge and understanding of women and men in governance and leadership issues; undertakes research on the barriers and successful pathways to women’s leadership; and develops communication and training materials for use in the Pacific.

Key outcomes of the GEPG include:

  • More women understand their rights and responsibilities, and are active as citizens and leaders to promote democratic governance (PNG, SI and Vanuatu).

  • Pacific women supported to stand for election and to effectively perform the roles and responsibilities of political office (up to 15 countries).

  • Increased support for women’s leadership and participation in government by broad and diverse sectors of Pacific societies (up to 15 countries).

  •  An increase in women-friendly and gender-sensitive government structures, operations and procedures.

Although it works across 15 Pacific Island countries, GEPG recognises that the significant under-representation of women in decision making positions is particularly acute in Melanesian countries. To this end, national program offices have been established in Papua New Guinea (with an additional sub-national office in the PNG Highlands), Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. GEPG teams in these countries work closely with government and civil society organisations to develop local programs, research and training to increase the representation of women in political leadership and decision making processes.
Representatives from PLP and AusAID Posts in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands sit on the GEPG Steering Committee.
