Program Overview
PLP has four main program objectives for 2011. These are:
-
To support leaders to lead effective influential organisations
-
To suport coalitions of leaders to identify and drive developmental change
-
To equip influential leaders to be effective with tailored resources relevant to their context
-
To build evidence, explore new leadership development initiatives and promote knowledge to strengthen leadership practice and assist stakeholders engaged in leadership development
To achieve these objectives, PLP has 5 strategies defining our work
-
Strengthening Leadership in key areas of influence: Under this strategy, PLP works directly with organisations in key areas including youth, church, private sector, public sector(regional), women and local/traditional leadership. In partnership with national and regional organisations in these areas, PLP works with leaders to identify priority developmental changes to implement. Leaders may request PLP to connect them with good advice, networks and resources to dives the changes.
-
Enabling nationally owned leadership development: This work currently focuses on facilitating National Leadership Development Forum (NLDF) and work has commenced in Tonga and Samoa. For example the Tonga National Leadership Development Forum(TNLDF) comprises approximately 10 leading Tongans including from the Tonga Parliament, church, business, youth council, civil society and nobility. It is jointly led by the Chair of the Civil Service Commission, PLP'S advisory panel member Mishka Tu'ifua. To shape it's works, the TNLDF is developing a framework of leadership priorities and recommendations to address them. An example is they are developing a leadership code to be adopted by civil servants and members of parliament to both motivate post holders and hold them to account.
-
Further Developing a Pacific Leadership resource hub: This work includes developing a mentoring program for 100 Pacific leaders, providing support to build relevant skillsfor leaders such as finance skills and board skills and providing expertise on leadership aspects of designs for larger development programs (eg donor education programs)
-
Supporting significant or innovative leadership initiatives: This includes leadership organisations such as Leadership PNG, Leaderhip Samoa and the Emerging Pacific Leadership Dialogue. It also includes smaller organisations doing innovative leadership activities at community level such as the Solomon Islands Development Trust (SIDT).
-
Developing and applying Pacific relevant leadership knowledge: PLP draws on and contributes to knowledge on developmental leadership including a partnership with AusAID led multi stakeholder Developmental Leadership Program (DLP). PLP and partner organisations will identify and commission studies and learning will have a practical bearing on future leadership work in the Pacific.
