YOUNG WOMEN LEADING CHANGE IN THE PACIFIC

The Pacific development community recently celebrated the launch of first ever Pacific Young Women’s Leadership Strategy. The Strategy, which was funded by the AusAID Pacific Leadership Program (PLP), marks a new way of connecting and collaborating at a regional level to develop young women's leadership in the region.

At the official launch of the Strategy during the International Women’s Summit in Zurich, Switzerland, World YWCA President Susan Brennan said “This strategy presents a comprehensive agenda for any organisation or individual wanting to developing the leadership potential of young women in the Pacific”.

AusAID PLP joined a reference group of established and emerging women and young women leaders from key UN and NGO stakeholders in the Pacific to develop the Strategy. During the strategic planning process, the reference group analysed feedback from extensive consultations with young women across the Pacific. This information informed the five key areas of the Strategy: Safe, Respected, Included, Connected and Skilled.
“This Strategy challenges us to acknowledge and address the underlying barriers that young Pacific women face in becoming leaders,” said Cameron Bowles, Regional Program Director of the AusAID Pacific Leadership Program. “It reminds us that these issues are more than just women’s issues, they are leadership issues” he added.

The Strategy reference group meets again in November to discuss the long-term implementation of the Strategy’s objectives. Copies of the Pacific Young Women’s Leadership Strategy can be obtained by contacting the AusAID Pacific Leadership Program on info@plp.org.fj
